What’s better than wrapping up the workday with beautiful piano music, a glass of wine, and good company? On Monday, October 5, Steinway Piano Gallery Nashville is bringing back First Mondays: Steinway Uncorked! for a relaxed evening of music, conversation, and connection.
From 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., guests are invited to stop by the gallery for a complimentary after-hours gathering featuring a special guest performer, Dr. Danny Milan, Assistant Professor of Piano and Division Head of Keyboard and Strings at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
There’s no formal concert-hall atmosphere here. Steinway Uncorked! is designed to be easygoing and welcoming. Come straight from work, bring a friend or colleague, enjoy a glass of wine, and spend an hour listening to an exceptional pianist perform on a Steinway grand.
Meet Dr. Danny Milan
This month’s special guest brings an impressive combination of performance, teaching, research, and composition to the Steinway Uncorked! series.
Dr. Danny Milan is an active performer, clinician, and researcher who has presented both internationally and at major conferences. As Assistant Professor of Piano and Division Head of Keyboard and Strings at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, he works with students while continuing to explore a wide range of musical interests.
His research includes Romanian music, pop music at the piano, and geomungo-piano repertoire. He’s also an independent recording artist and composer, making this a wonderful opportunity to hear a program that goes well beyond the familiar piano repertoire.
A Program Full of Discovery
One of the things that makes this evening special is the variety of music on the program. Dr. Milan will take guests on a musical journey spanning centuries, styles, and traditions.
The evening begins with Franz Joseph Haydn’s Sonata in C Minor, Hob. XVI: 20, a work from 1771 that showcases the clarity, character, and expressive possibilities of the piano repertoire of Haydn’s era.
From there, the program moves into the 20th century with Henry Cowell’s Three Irish Legends, which includes The Tides of Manaunaun, The Hero Sun, and The Voice of Lir. Cowell was known for exploring unconventional sounds and techniques at the piano, making his music an intriguing contrast to Haydn.
The program also includes Jonathan B. McNair’s Rabun Gap, composed in 2020, bringing a contemporary voice into the evening.
Then comes a particularly special portion of the program: music by Romanian composer and pianist Dinu Lipatti. Guests will hear his Nocturne in A Minor (on a Moldovan Theme), Nocturne in F-Sharp Minor, and Sonatina for Left Hand. Lipatti’s works aren’t heard as frequently as those of many other major 20th-century composers, so this is a chance to discover some beautiful and distinctive piano music.
The evening concludes with Alexander Scriabin’s Sonata in F-Sharp Major, Op. 30, a work from 1903 that offers a dramatic and expressive finish to the program.
An Evening to Slow Down and Listen
Steinway Uncorked! is about more than simply attending a piano performance. It’s an opportunity to step away from the usual pace of the day and enjoy music in an intimate setting.
You don’t have to be a pianist or a longtime classical music enthusiast to enjoy the evening. Whether you know the composers on the program or you’re simply curious to hear something new, you’re welcome to join us.
And because the event takes place right here at Steinway Piano Gallery Nashville, you’ll also have the chance to experience the sound and character of a Steinway grand up close.
