This fascinating film explores the relationship between musician and instrument, chronicles the manufacturing process, and investigates what makes each Steinway unique. Watch the evolution from forest floor to concert hall. Meet the craftsmen and women who shape L1037′s personality. Discover the depths of artists’ relationships with their instruments. From the factory floor in Queens to Steinway Hall in Manhattan, each piano’s journey is complex, spanning 12 months, 12,000 parts, 450 craftsmen, and countless hours of fine-tuned labor. Filmed in key Steinway locations—their NY factory, Steinway’s piano reserve bank, and private auditions. Note By Note is the first documentary to portray the patience, craft, and personality built into each Steinway.

Bios

John Birdsong has been described as one of the most “soulful” upright jazz bass players in the Nashville area. John is applauded by Donald Brown, well-respected jazz pianist (Grammy-nominee), for his ability to “lay down the groove and maintain a steady pulse.”

John’s love for music began at an early age in Pulaski, Tennessee where he was introduced to jazz by Mr. Zettie Murrell. When a guest bassist visited the music program of his elementary school, John was mesmerized by the size and tone of the instrument, but decided to study the cornet because it was easier to carry.

Although he wanted to pursue music as a major, he was encouraged by family and friends to pursue other career options. He ultimately received a Bachelor of Science degree in Building Construction, a Doctorate of Jurisprudence degree and a national certification in Business and Economic Development. He worked with the State of Tennessee for 37 years during which time he served as a Director within the Department of Economic Development for Tennessee and as the State Director of Title VI Compliance Commission until his retirement earlier this year.

While still working for the State of Tennessee, at the mature age of 32, John decided that it was finally time to pursue his dream of learning to play the string bass. John began studying with Earl Gately (Nashville Symphony Orchestra). Local guitarist, Chuck Schlacter encouraged him and provided him with his first gig at a local club, 325 Union. Ilyas Muhammad was also a strong supporter of John’s dream and allowed him to practice his art at his local jazz club Café Unique.

John played string bass with the Easy Jazz Quartet for several years but later decided to start his own group called the Birdsong Trio. In addition to performing at upscale events and conventions, the trio performed at the award winning Sunday Brunch each week at Mere Bulles Restaurant in downtown Nashville for 10 years until the restaurant closed in 2002. Since 1995, the trio has performed at F. Scott’s Restaurant and Jazz bar in Nashville on Fridays to packed audiences. (He also performs a piano and string bass duo at Criallo’s in Cool Springs on a weekly basis.)

The Society also seeks to promote awareness of varied opportunities for musical enrichment. Neither ownership of a piano nor ability to play is necessary for membership.

It is Mohr who enables virtuosos to fully realize their own individual interpretative styles and concepts of tonal color. Says Mohr himself: ”I play more at Carnegie Hall than anybody else, but I have no audience.”

As Steinway & Sons’ chief technician and Master Tuner in Vienna, Stefan Knüpfer is dedicated to the unusual task of pairing world-class instruments with world-famous pianists. Juggling the demands of the pianist, the piano, and the piece to find the perfect match requires boundless enthusiasm, but also endless patience and nerves of steel. No detail is too small or too inconsequential for Knüpfer, not even the tiniest speck of dust on a piano string. Pianomania is a humorous and surprisingly suspenseful peek into the heated clash of wills between a genius craftsman and the renowned pianists who rely on his talent – including Lang Lang, Alfred Brendel, Rudolf Buchbinder and Pierre-Laurent Aimand – as they search together for that elusive perfect tone. Franz Mohr will be doing a talk and taking questions about what it’s like to be one of the greatest piano technicians in the world! Come see and hear what it’s like to see the piano through the eyes of the best technicians in the world! For more information and to get tickets call the Belcourt Theatre Box Office at (615) 383-9140.

The inaugural concert of Belmont’s new Jazz Piano Concert Series will feature Billy Childs at 7:30 p.m. in Massey Concert Hall at Belmont University on Tuesday, January 10th.

The Belmont Jazz Piano series is sponsored by the Steinway Piano Gallery of Nashville.

BILLY CHILDS BIO

Billy Childs was born in Los Angeles on March 8th, 1957. Having demonstrated an aptitude for piano as early as age six, Childs developed rapidly, and at age sixteen entered the USC-sponsored Community School of the Performing Arts, studying theory with Marienne Uszler and piano with John Weisenfluh. In 1975, he entered USC as a composition major, graduating four years later with a bachelor of music in composition under the tutelage of Robert Linn.

Since then Mr. Childs has received a number of orchestral commissions from, among others: Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Leonard Slatkin, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, The Kronos Quartet, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the American Brass Quintet, and the Dorian Wind Quintet.

After apprenticing with Freddie Hubbard and J.J. Johnson in the late seventies and early eighties, Childs’ solo jazz recording career began in 1988, when he released Take For Example, This… the first of four critically acclaimed albums on the Windham Hill Jazz label. He followed that album with Twilight Is Upon Us (1989), His April Touch (1992), and Portrait Of A Player (1993). His next album, I’ve Known Rivers on Stretch/GRP (now Stretch/Concord) was released in 1995, followed by The Child Within, released on the Shanachie record label in 1996. Most recently, Mr. Childs has recorded two volumes of jazz/chamber music – Lyric, Vol. 1 (2006) and Autumn: In Moving Pictures, Vol. 2 (2010) – music which is an amalgam of jazz and classical elements, developed with his ensemble through rehearsal, performance, and recording, over the course of ten years.

Thus far, in his career, Childs has garnered ten Grammy nominations and three Grammy awards: two for best instrumental composition (Into the Light from Lyric and The Path Among The Trees from Autumn: In Moving Pictures) and one for best arrangement accompanying a vocalist. In 2009, Childs was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and in 2006 was awarded a Chamber Music America composer’s grant.

As a pianist Childs has recently performed with, among others, Yo-Yo Ma, Sting, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony, the Kronos Quartet, Wynton Marsalis, Jack DeJohnette, Ron Carter, the Ying String Quartet, the American Brass Quintet, and Chris Botti. In January 2010, The Detroit Symphony (Leonard Slatkin conducting) premiered Childs’ Concerto For Violin And Orchestra with Regina Carter as soloist. Upcoming commissions include a new piece for the Los Angeles Master Chorale, and another new work for the Kronos String Quartet.
